A decomposition method for approximate evaluation of continuous flow multi-stage lines with general Markovian machines

چکیده
In this paper, a decomposition method for evaluating the performance of continuous flow lines with machines characterized by general Markovian fluid models and finite capacity buffers is proposed. This study uses the exact solution of general two-stage Markovian fluid models as a building block. Decomposition equations are provided to propagate the effect of partial and complete blocking and starvation phenomena throughout the system. A decomposition algorithm that solves the new decomposition equations is proposed. Numerical results prove the good accuracy of the developed method. In particular, a comparison with existing techniques shows that our method is generally more accurate, especially in the estimation of the average buffer levels. Moreover, additional information can be collected by the application of our approach which enables a deeper analysis of the system behavior. Finally, the generality of the approach allows for modeling and studying many different system configurations within a unique framework, also including several previously uninvestigated layouts.

Modeling and Analysis of Markovian Continuous Flow Production Systems with a Finite Buffer: Methodology and Applications
Fluid flow models have been used in performance evaluation of production, computer, and telecommunication systems. Currently, a general methodology to model and analyze a given continuous flow production system is not available. In order to develop a general methodology to analyze Markovian continuous material flow production systems with a finite buffer, we modelled the fluid flow system as a ...
متن کاملApproximate performance analysis of production lines with continuous material flows and finite buffers
In this paper, we analyze production lines consisting of a number of machines or servers in series with a finite buffer between each pair of machines. The flow of products through the machines is continuous. Each machine suffers from breakdowns, because of, for example, failures, cleaning and changeover. The upand downtimes are independent and generally distributed. We develop a new method to e...

In this study, a Markovian fluid flow system with two stages separated by a finite buffer is considered. Fluid flow models have been analyzed extensively to evaluate the performance of production, computer, and telecommunication systems. Recently, we developed a methodology to analyze general Markovian continuous flow systems with a finite buffer. The flexibility of this methodology allows us t...

A two-stage hybrid flow shop problem can be considered as part of a larger issue; when solved, it can find a partial solution of a main and bigger problem. Here and in the current paper, a two-stage hybrid flow shop problem with one machine in the first stage and two machines in the second stage with three criteria such as: 1) maximum manufacturing time, 2) average manufacturing time and 3) sum...
متن کاملExtending the Scope of Analytical Methods for Performance Evaluation of Manufacturing Flow Systems
Manufacturing flow systems consisting of machines separated by buffers of finite capacity have been studied a lot in the literature because systems of this type are widely encountered in industry. The basic assumptions are that the processing time of each machine is deterministic and machines are subject to random failures. Failure and repair times of each machine are characterized by probabili...
